Holden Youth Weekend - May 24-27, 2008
The Holden Youth Weekends are a series of youth retreats held each weekend in May. They are open to students in grades 9 through 12. The program includes speakers, music, worship, small group conversations, and free time activities. After conversation with the Senior League participants last week and the Youth Board this week, we decided that this was the only weekend which would work for us.
The event is led by student leaders from Trinity Lutheran College. They are 'Digging into the Bible' and creating weekends that will be meaningful on many levels. An extra bonus, Luther Seminary is sending a 'TheoRush' team! This optional 3-hour Bible study is open to selected students who want to 'dig' farther into the Word. Check the box on the registration form if you’re interested in this opportunity! (Click HERE for more information about TheoRush.)
There will be many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, including time for an afternoon hike to see a high mountain lake, mountains, and wildlife. Holden also has a recreation center, an ice cream parlor, and plenty of space to sit outside and enjoy the beauty surrounding the village. Holden Youth Weekends are sponsored by Trinity Lutheran College, in cooperation with Holden Village and planning teams from local congregations in the Northwest.
Holden Village
Holden Village is nestled in a remote area of the Cascade Mountains in north-central Washington. Once a mining village, Holden is now a year-round Lutheran retreat center, surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks and a rushing stream. Part of the Holden experience is traveling there on a beautiful boat ride from Field’s Point Landing to Lucerne, where buses meet the boat and transport participants 11 miles up the mountain to the village. At Holden, you will find yourself in a beautiful place “set apart,” free of telephones, televisions, and fast food restaurants. It’s a perfect place for youth to slow down and enjoy God’s creation!
Theme for 2008
The theme is “Digging Into the Word.” In experiential and relational ways, we will dig into God’s Word and explore how the bible can be God’s “Living Word” for today. Opportunities will be presented for those unfamiliar with the Bible as well as in-depth study of scripture for those who want to dig deeper. In addition to general sessions, there will be a special mini-workshop called “TheoRush” for those who want to dig deeper and explore ministry opportunities. There will also be a service project for everyone as well as time to hike, relax, and renew.
Event Dates
Our group will go the last weekend of May. We’ll work out exact details later, but we’ll need to spend Saturday night in Wenatchee, WA at a church where a friend of mine works. Then we’ll need to be at the dock at 8:45 a.m. on Sunday morning for the boat to Holden Village. It leaves from Field’s Point Landing, on the south side of Lake Chelan, 16 miles west of Chelan, Wash. Field’s Point has restrooms, a telephone, and a concession stand. The boat will arrive back to Field’s Point Landing around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Then we’ll drive back to Kalispell, arriving around midnight on Tuesday. It will mean missing only one day of school, as Monday is the Memorial Day Holiday.
Program Cost
The cost is $135 per person, which includes program, roundtrip boat fare, and lodging and seven meals while at Holden. The Senior League Fund, from our fundraising (like the Easter Breakfast) will cover transportation expenses. We will determine our plan of action as to leaving Kalispell on Friday or Saturday and what else we might do. There may be some additional costs, but $135 should cover almost everything except for snacks on the road. Please contact Pastor Andy or Pastor Dan if you need scholarship assistance with the $135 registration fee.
To Register (Click on the Form to load the PDF version)
Complete the Registration Form, Medical Release Form, and Covenant of Conduct Form.
Return the forms along with a $135 check made out to NLC Senior League to the church by Wednesday, March 12, 2008. I know this isn’t a lot of time, but we need to get our registration into Trinity to get space at this weekend. They often fill up.
Refunds
If something changes, refunds are available with a letter of explanation sent to the coordinators before April 1, 2008. No refunds will be issued after this date.
Medical Release and Covenant of Conduct Forms
Be sure to list any special needs (medical, dietary, etc.) on the Medical Release Form. Please be advised that due to Holden’s location, medical evacuations are extremely difficult. Participants with chronic conditions should carefully consider their involvement. The Covenant of Conduct forms the group’s “contract” for the event.
